I like following this tumblr for the rare but remarkable glimpses of someone who actually appears to be from the past.  It’s not just something you can achieve by careful costumes.  You have to look like someone from that far country.  It’s not all that common in the Western world these days.

This guy has the look.  His curls are bright and unkempt.  His teeth are sound, which would make him lucky in the past, but they aren’t so orthodontically done as to be unrecognizable.  His face is pocked — here, it is just acne, but in the past it might well have been the remains of a childhood disease or of smallpox.  He’s well-fed, but not fat, and he is entertained simply to be alive.
